Guest Speaker: Simon Delahunty-Forrest - Director for Planning & Development within the Place, Prosperity and Sustainability Directorate for Birmingham City Council.

Simon began his career in local government in June 1989 as an apprentice architectural technologist with Birmingham City Council. Today, he is Director for Planning and Development within the Place, Prosperity and Sustainability Directorate, with responsibility for specialist areas including the City Design Team, Central Birmingham Planning Management, Northwest Planning Management and city-wide development planning.

A qualified architect and town planner, and a proud Brummie, Simon has spent more than 30 years shaping Birmingham’s built environment. As the Council’s lead design adviser, he champions design quality, placemaking, architecture and urban design, promoting high standards across new development for the benefit of Birmingham’s citizens.

Simon has an outstanding track record in planning, regeneration and service transformation, leading major projects involving public and private sector partners, residents, investors, developers, landowners, operators and funders. He is known for building strong relationships, encouraging pragmatic collaboration and balancing high-quality development with viable delivery and funding requirements.

He has led or shaped many of Birmingham’s major masterplans and regeneration frameworks, including the Big City Plan, Birmingham Curzon HS2 Masterplan for Growth, Birmingham Smithfield, Langley Sustainable Urban Extension, Perry Barr, Rea Valley Urban Quarter and Our Future City: Central Birmingham 2040 Framework.

His contribution to placemaking and planning has been recognised through numerous awards, including the Regional RTPI Award for Perry Barr 2040, RTPI West Midlands Awards for Planning Excellence 2022, and the Insider Special Achievement Award 2021. Simon’s passion for Birmingham is central to his leadership and drives his commitment to sustainable, inclusive city growth and regeneration.

Having played a key role in shaping Birmingham's planning and regeneration story over the past 35 years, simon will talk through how the city has evolved through the Big City Plan and Our Future City Plan 2045 and will look ahead at thse projects on the horizon for the next wave of regeneration that will help deliver Birmingham's next chapter of growth.
