Event Details:
This is another walk with Paul Talling, this time following a route from the edge of Whitechapel onto Shadwell, Limehouse and into Poplar and despite these areas being the subject of many of Paul’s walks we cover a totally different route in this walk to those you may have done with Paul before, seeing & talking about many interesting subjects.
This walk covers old railyards, arches, visible shrapnel damage from World War II, dead pubs, the shop (now café) where Harrods used to be before the move to Knightsbridge, surviving traffic bollards with the initials of a theatre which tragically collapsed a few days after it opened in 1828, Wiltons (London’s oldest surviving grand music hall), the boarded up St Paul's Mission Room (as featured in the All New Edition of Derelict London), Swedenborg Gardens the site of a Swedish Church from 1728 to 1911, a park opened by King George V on the site of a former fish market, the mouth of the Black Ditch (one of London's Lost Rivers) where it joins the River Thames and much more including a few quirky tangents as usual along the way.
The walk ends at Chrisp Street Market in Poplar which is a 2-min walk from All Saints DLR station.
Please note that this walk is all outdoors and will not be cancelled due to weather conditions. It does not involve trespassing on private property. Dogs are welcome.
